21st Century Afterschool and Summer Programs

What is 21st Century?

The primary purpose of Maine’s 21st CCLC program is to provide school and community partnerships with funding to establish or expand programs that provide students in high-need, economically-disadvantaged communities with academic enrichment opportunities designed to complement their traditional school day curriculum.  In addition, these programs can provide a broad array of additional support services related to overall student health and well-being.

21st Century Enrichment Activities

The 21st Century Afterschool and Summer Programs provides safe, engaging, and enriching learning opportunities for students outside of the regular school day. The program offers academic support, hands-on enrichment activities, and social-emotional learning experiences that help students build skills, confidence, and a love of learning. Enrichment Clubs include STEM, Literacy, Physical Activity, Nutrition Education, Visual and Performing Arts, and Youth Leadership. In addition to supporting student achievement, the program encourages family engagement and partners with community organizations to create meaningful learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom.

What's Happening This Month in 21st Century

This month some of the clubs being offered throughout the district are: Art Club, Cooking Club, STEM/ Engineering Club, Coding Club, Woodworking club, and Sports and Fitness Club.

Our students across the district also helping to start up and to care for our hydroponic gardening units. Students have been growing lettuce, kale, basil, cucumbers, tomatoes, and more.

Cooking club: Students are mastering the "Bear Claw" grip to hold food safely and the "Tunnel Cut" for slicing round objects by using child-safe nylon knives or butter knives. Students are also giving feedback on the recipes they are making to add to their end of year cookbook.

Art: Students will explore texture and pattern, create a balanced composition, and use fabric as an artistic medium. Younger students are working with perspective and how to apply this to their drawings.
